There are only a few supplement products we recommend because we believe in getting nutrition from whole foods. But, at the same time, we are also realistic. We realize that whole foods are not always convenient or fast. For those times where we need something nutritious, on-the-go, we look to Vega. Vega makes a variety of products but our favorites are the nutritional shakes and the protein powders.
We were introduced to Vega products about 7 years ago when we were looking for a better alternative to the green powders that were gaining popularity. We found that Vega was a fully vegan, plant based, clean product and decided to give it a try. Having experienced a lot of health food drinks with horrible flavors, we were naturally skeptical. We didn’t want to buy a large bottle of one of their products before tasting it. So we decided to try to contact them to see if we could get some samples. They were exceptionally polite and quickly shipped an assortment of product samples. Ever since then we’ve been avid users. The flavor and quality of their products is top notch.
Along our journey we try to keep an eye on the existing products we use to make sure they don’t get sold and change quality/integrity. In 2011, I (Jennifer Richter), got the opportunity to go to a presentation by one of the founders of Vega (Brendan Brazier). I learned a lot about his background as a vegan Ironman triathlete and how Vega was created as a passion by him, mostly for him. He was disappointed by the lack of high quality plant based products on the market and wanted something better. You could tell by listening to him that he wasn’t in it for the business. He was truly just in it to design quality products for himself and people like him.
We continued to recommend Vega to our closest friends. Everyone loved it and continued to tell their friends.
About a year or two ago we started to pay attention to the lack of standards in monitoring heavy metals in foods. Pesticides are governed by organic standards, but with a lot of food sources coming from China and other countries, heavy metals in foods are becoming an increasing problem. Fortunately, we found a source that has started an initiative to test foods. We were pleased to see that Vega tested as one of the most clean products they’ve ever tested where some of the other popular brands you see on Whole Foods shelves tested extremely bad and, in some cases, dangerous. More about heavy metal testing here and here.
At this point we are firm in our belief that Vega is a solid product. We highly recommend that you add it to your arsenal of health products. Here is a great recipe to get you started:
- Handful of frozen chunks of Avocado (whenever your Avocado’s are about to go bad just cut them into chunks and put in freezer to preserve)
- Cup of Dark Chocolate Almond Milk
- Handful of Organic Rasberries
- Scoop of Chocolate Vega
- and a little rice milk or water to desired consistency
Blend this in a blender until smooth.
